Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society (La Société d'Honneur Française) was founded as a departmental honor society at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1906.

The Society's symbols are the traditional symbols of France: the French cockerel and three fleurs-de-lis. The fleurs-de-lis bear the Greek letters Pi Delta Phi.

History and Purpose of the Society
After twenty years as a local chapter, Pi Delta Phi declared itself the National French Honor Society and chartered the Beta Chapter at the University of Southern California in 1925.

The Society slowly expanded during the next fifteen years. After World War II, Pi Delta Phi has enjoyed phenomenal growth. At the present time, it numbers 260 chapters established at representative public and private colleges and universities in almost every state, as well as chapters in Paris and Aix-en-Provence.

The Society was admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies in 1967. Wofford College's Theta Upsilon Chapter was founded in 1978.

The purpose of the Society is three-fold:

(1) to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and literature;

(2) to increase the knowledge and admiration of Americans for the contributions of France to world culture;

(3) to stimulate and encourage cultural activities which will lead to a deeper appreciation of France and its people.

Membership Qualifications
To qualify for membership in Pi Delta Phi, students must meet the following requirements:

completion of at least one semester (three regular courses) of upper-level French (courses numbered 300 or higher)
rank in the upper 35% of his/her class in general studies, as well as in French. These rankings are determined by the Department Chair in consultation with the Registrar; both rankings usually require a 3.00 GPA at Wofford.
have an overall GPA of at least 2.8 (after requirement #2 above is met), with a minimum GPA in French of 3.00 (after requirement #2 above is met).
